Demo, Cleaning, and Patching
When we purchased the camper our city was recovering from hurricane Irma, our oldest had just started an intensive middle school fundamental gifted program, and I was still getting used to transferring schools. This meant progress on the camper would be slow and sporadically placed between kid’s assignments and lesson planning. Before cleaning I removed the fabric “headboard”, valances, bedding, and wallpaper border. I spent an hour here and there over the course of two weeks to scrub every surface I could reach with TSP. I have used TSP for years to help prep for painting. The key things to remember are to dilute according to the container directions and use gloves. I also recommend applying with a spray bottle and shaking before each spray. If you apply too much and don’t wipe it off you could have issues with paint adhering to your surface. I made certain I would not have this issue by following up with a vinegar and water mixture since I planned to paint pretty much every surface in the camper. Once the walls were dry I patched what felt like a million holes with a pre mixed vinyl spackling. I opted for a vinyl spackle since the entire camper is covered with vinyl wallpaper. It applied easily and has held up perfectly in the 9 months since it was applied.
